Webster County advocates understand the important role that mentoring and tutoring can play in motivating and supporting students to achieve their fullest potential. A group in Dixon plans to implement a tutoring program at Dixon Elementary and Webster County High School. The group is currently looking for volunteers in all study areas, especially math. Mentors will be provided materials to work with students. Contact Paul Westerman to volunteer. A group in Providence piloted a mentoring program September 16, 2009 at Providence Elementary through which community volunteers will be working with first graders one-on-one with "fry words." This initiative is aimed at helping students read on grade level and view reading as an enjoyable activity. Students are already very excited about visits from their mentors, group leaders report. Contact Tony or Loretta Felker to volunteer. Pat Hammack is looking for volunteer mentors for children throughout Webster County. Contact Pat at the Webster County Board of Education at 270.639.0103 for information. Mentoring and tutoring are inexpensive programs to run, but require a corps of volunteers who can give a little time to make a big difference in a child’s life. Finally, Mike Walker is collaborating with Sebree Elementary Principal Dave Rupsch for a "Safe Routes to School" program, which will provide safe biking and walking paths near Sebree Elementary. |
